The South African tech job market is real and growing — but junior developers often approach it the wrong way. Spamming applications to job boards rarely works. What works is a combination of signal, network, and positioning.
Stop applying to job boards cold
Most junior applications on LinkedIn and PNet disappear into a black hole. Recruiters get hundreds of applications for each junior role — and most CVs look identical. You need to stand out before you apply.
Strategy 1: OfferZen
OfferZen flips the job search model — companies approach you. But your profile needs to be excellent. A strong OfferZen profile includes a clean bio, a full skills list, real GitHub projects, and your salary expectations. When it's done well, you'll get 3–5 company approaches within your first two weeks.
Strategy 2: Build in public
Post your projects on GitHub and LinkedIn as you build them. Write short posts about what you learned. Tag the companies you admire. This creates a trail of evidence that you're learning and shipping — exactly what hiring managers look for in juniors.
"I got my Vodacom interview because a recruiter saw my LinkedIn post about a data pipeline I built during my Junior Mentor capstone project. I didn't apply — they found me."
Strategy 3: Target companies that hire juniors
- ✓Takealot, Superbalist, MrD (e-commerce tech)
- ✓Standard Bank, Nedbank, Capitec (fintech)
- ✓Vodacom, MTN, Rain (telco)
- ✓Jumo, Peach Payments, Ozow (fintech startups)
- ✓MiWay, Discovery, OUTsurance (insuretech)
